Joseph Ira Dassin, Joe Dassin said
(November 5, 1938 in New York - August 20, 1980 in Papeete,
France) is a French singer and songwriter and French. As a
singer, he has had many successes in the Francophonie and
elsewhere, in a short career (1965-1980).

Joe is the son of Jules Dassin, film director, and Beatrice
Launer (1913-2005), virtuoso violinist. He has two sisters.
His grandfather was a Russian emigrant who left Odessa in
America because, they said it was enough to bend down to pick up
gold by handfuls. Barely 14 years, not speaking a word of
English when, immigration was asked his name, he mumbled that he
came from Odessa, which was taken for an answer to the question
and he received identification documents bearing the name of ...
"Cocker".
The 1960s: the beginning of success
He studied anthropology at the University of Michigan. His
doctorate in hand, he returned to France and worked as a
technician for his father, then made some figures in his films.
His father hired him as assistant on the set of Topkapi, then it
is host to Radio Luxembourg.
Maryse Massiera is an acquaintance of Catherine Regnier,
secretary at CBS Records. The U.S. company has recently settled
in France, so in order to distribute the discs of his American
stars. Listening to the soundtrack, CBS believes to launch its
first French artist.
On December 26, 1964, Joe Dassin, French first sign in a U.S.
record company, recording four songs accompanied by the
orchestra of Oswald of Andrea, whose two songs are signed
Jean-Michel Rivat and Frank Thomas. Early 1966, after two more
attempts, Jacques Souplet, new CEO of CBS France, he presents
what would become his producer and friend, Jacques Plait.
On 20 August 1980, he died at the age of 41 following a
myocardial infarction during vacation in Papeete, Tahiti.
Thirty years after his death, Joe Dassin lies in 14th position
in the ranking of singers who sold the most records in France as
the site of Europe while his son Julian spends in October 2010 a
musical in honor of his father.
